Best TV Shows : The Devil's Advocate

Last September, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented the 64th
Primetime Emmy Awards to America?s best on-air television shows. The drama Homeland,
comedy Modern Family, and political TV movie Game Change dominated that night ? but do
Ridge High School students agree with those results?
A survey of 100 students shows that perhaps the Emmy Awards are not accurate
depictions of the views of Ridge High School students. When asked what they believed the best
TV shows were, Ridge students gave their answers, with How I Met Your Mother being the top
show.
However, differences between grades are inevitable. Freshmen seem to agree that Glee
and The Big Bang Theory top the charts, while sophomores seem to think the top shows are Suits
and Pretty Little Liars. Juniors added to the list Breaking Bad, while seniors added The Walking
Dead and Modern Family. Nonetheless, the survey also revealed that there are incredible
varieties not only between grades, but also within a single grade. Philip Ling ?13, said that the
top three TV shows of his grade are Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Pretty Little Liars (?for
the girls?) while Nicole McCreesh ?13, claimed that the top shows in her grade are Nashville,
Workaholics, and Modern Family.
It is difficult to gauge the best and favorite shows of Ridge High School in general
because of the incredible diversity of the student body. At a random questioning, favorite
TV shows ranged from the comedies (How I Met Your Mother and Modern Family), to the
dramas (Homeland and Downton Abbey), to the talk shows (The Colbert Report and The Ellen
DeGeneres Show). Luca Jobbagy ?10, agreed, as she believed that ?there are just too many TV
shows and too many different people with different personalities that it is hard to think of what
the top three shows in my grade are.?
These shows may provide weekly entertainment for the average student, but do TV
shows truly have a strong influence on students? lives? Pooja Kasinath ?15, explained that she
does not think they do ?just because in general, the kids at Ridge are so focused on whatever
it is they do, whether it be school, sports, or etc. TV shows for people at Ridge, while they are
truly entertaining, are just TV shows.? A 2011 survey by the University of Southern California
revealed that watching TV decreases a teen?s academic focus and skill, but it looks like Ridge
students won?t be losing their momentum anytime soon!
