Photoshop isn't design software. It's raster-based program used primarily for... photos. Illustrator and/or Indesign are used in combination with Photoshop to create complete graphics/ads/etc. Do you have any design schooling or experience? I would recommend learning design basics before you touch any computer software. Many universities offer continuing ed classes. Perhaps that would be a good place to start.
